Lulo & Ly

Lulo + Ly believe that flowers are for everyone. Creating unique, vivid and magical arrangements, using the most seasonal and interesting flowers. Sharing their love of flowers through workshops and private events allows them to help people get in touch with their creativity and reconnect with the natural world.

Lulo + Ly Floral Studio is the creation of three women who met in NYC. Luemma, Lauren + Harley shared a love of florals that was experimental, colourful and flamboyant. Having worked together for over a year on creating dream florals for dream clients throughout Manhattan, Brooklyn + Queens, their time together was cut short due to the recent Covid pandemic. After Luemma was quickly moved back to Australia, it was obvious that the only natural steps were to expand, taking Lulo + Ly with her.

What do you like to make?

I like to make vibrant, interesting and fun floral arrangements and installations that make people smile, laugh or cry.

I have felt connected to flowers my whole life. My Mum is a passionate force of nature who spends all her spare time tending to her incredible garden overflowing with abundant colour and scents. I almost feel as though it’s in my blood. My Gran lived in Menorca, Spain for the majority of her life in a quaint little white terrace. I remember visiting one year at the end of summer and finding her up a ladder pruning her bougainvillea back when she was well into her 80’s. I studied fashion design and business in my early twenties but was worn down by a demanding job so left the industry completely after only a few years. When I eventually decided to start creating with flowers, I knew I had found my place.

What’s the inspiration for your work?

I like to get to know my clients and ask a lot of questions to help develop a palette or aesthetic that I feel suits them, so in ways it’s people who inspire me. If I have free reign then I like to create with lots of colour, I love a vibrant palette... I can be inspired by a painting or an old record cover or a fun textile and then I develop from there. I am continually sending photos or screen shots back and forth to my two business partners, Lo and Ly, who are in New York. We have a magical creative connection and will discuss even the tiniest details with one another, there is something so beautiful about collaboration.

What are you making during the times of lock-down?

Lots of food!!!! Food and flowers are my life so when i’m not working on my floristry i’m most likely prepping my next meal or snack. I’m living in a house with some incredible cooks right now so it’s been lovely taking turns to plan meals and sit around a dinner table enjoying food and wine together.  I have also recently made a website for my work which was a huge achievement for me. I call myself tech-silly, technology seems to crash whenever i’m around, so ticking this off my long to-do list was a real big one! Oh and my partner and I are about to develop a trivia questionnaire to host for our friends online so this should be interesting.

How can people support what you do?

There are so many ways people can support small artists/makers/creatives like myself. The easiest, and cheapest way is through social media. Instagram is the biggest tool for folks like me and often acts as our portfolio for the world to see! Re-posting one photo could book us an entire event, wedding or exhibition. I know flowers can be seen as a luxury item, but I do believe that they should be for everyone so I always encourage people to say hi! Once iso is lifted I will be releasing workshop dates so I would love for people to join me in creating some magical florals.

Do you have any recommendations for any locked-in folks with cabin fever?

Tell us a bit about a favourite project?

Oh this is hard! Mmm okay,  I put together an exhibition of 5 female/non-binary artists in Brooklyn called No Box Gap. I’d been living in New York for 6 months and was waiting on my work rights and was really struggling mentally. I had moved round to a few cash in hand hospo jobs and just missed creating and collaborating. My partner and I met some incredible artists so we teamed together to create this amazing show in a really short period of time. I had never used texta as a medium before but I had started drawing for the first time ever and created really bright artworks of the somewhat mundane (views from my bedroom, or waiting at the laundry mat). I also installed a huge floral wall that was to deteriorate over time, finding beauty in the different stages of decay. My partner exhibited a series of photographs and tattooed people on the night. Our friend Zanni painted a huge wall of naked bodies and exhibited her jewelry along side it and our friends Izzy and Mads created a sculptural installation out of hand made clays and tiles. It was crazy how beautifully it came together and the turn out was better than we could’ve imagined. It sparked something inside of me and brought me back to life, it made me realise that I was still capable and I went on to do some really cool things during those 2 and a half years.
